Rebecca - It is so simple - it has a sharp little needle on one end and you line the fat part of the egg up with the needle and "punch" it. My mom said that you poke a hole so that the shell doesn't crack while cooking. I've never tried to hard boil eggs any other way... It is a handy gadget and it costs about $5. I love it. My mom and grandmother even used one! Some people think it's a little strange, but this is how I was taught to make hard-boiled eggs and the method has never failed - why mess with success?? :-)

I have never in my life heard of an egg puncher or heard of safety pin to puncture the egg! Where have I been and what have I missed?? I wouldn't even believe it if I didn't include the picture! I'll try it soon:)
